Ceremonial gathering

newn ?????? ???? ?????????? (1)nnn

Artist: Aggelos Makridis

Location: International Larnaka Airport departure area. Larnaka district.

Material: Bronze

Category: Modern sculpture

Photography: Evangelia Matthopoulou

Makrides’ work was made in 2009. Twelve bronze torsi, eleven male and one female, form a circle, in the middle of which is placed a pot. The circle is the usual arrangement of the participants during a ceremonial gathering. In this case the gathering takes place around a ceremonial pot, symbolically referring to the hearth and the sacred fire. The hearth symbolizes origins, and is associated with the eternal flame, which in turn implies commemoration.

Material: Cement, inox, minerals, LEDs

Category: Modern sculpture

Theodoulos Gregoriou is the only artist among the nine who worked on the Larnaka airport project to have his works (Cells and Hourglass) outdoors.

The Cells were installed in 2009 and in a way they are connected to the nearby Hourglass. While the latter comments time-stream, the Cells refer to the basic carrier of life, and thus time, the biological cell. Cells bear certain configurations but at the same time retain the ability to evolve in infinite directions assuming a wide range of material forms, depending on the correlated ‘environment’. Gregoriou’ cells gestate audio sounds, and those cut in half project on their flat surface images of time and life.

Category: Union (enosis), Ancient Greek and Byzantine legacy, Public sculpture before 1960

Kimon (510-449 B.C.) was a General and politician from Athens. In 450 B.C. he headed towards Cyprus with the aim to liberate it from the Persians and restore Athens’ sovereignty in Aegean Sea. He died during the siege of Kition but had ordered his co-fighters to keep his death secret, which they indeed managed, for a good thirty days. During that time the Athenians won the naval and infantry battle at Salamina, Cyprus, on their way back to Athens.

In addition to the direct connection with Ancient Greek legacy, Kimon’s bust raises another implication, based on the short note on the pedestal. The phrase “Even dead he would win” («Και νεκρός ενίκα») reminds of the historical facts, but also calls upon bravery, heroic patterns and suggests (in many levels) the power both of symbols and the ancestral memory.

The bust was commissioned by Kition community in 1923. The unveiling took place on April 27th 1927. The bust was replaced in the beginning of the 1990s and the new unveiling took place on October 25th 1994.

The memorial was commissioned by Lysi community. Although Lysi village is situated in the occupied part of Cyprus, its’ authorities are regularly elected by their ex-inhabitants in the free part of the island. The same policy is applied to all the occupied municipalities and communities.

The memorial was initially dedicated to eight EOKA 1955-59 dead and the initial unveiling took place in September 6th 1996. In 2000 the memorial was reformed and it was extended physically: The initial construction consisted of the (current) central part with the marble platform and the standing female militant figure on top. In 2000 nine stele in total were added on the left and right hand site with the names of dead and missing Lysi fighters during the inter-communal conflicts of 1958 and the Turkish invasion. The second unveiling of the current memorial took place on September 8th 2011 and is now dedicated to thirty four dead and missing fighters.

The monument is located close to Larnaka Municipal Library and Municipal Garden. It was commissioned in 1964 by the Larnaka “Lions” Club, Larnaka Municipality and Larnaka-Ammochostos “Salina” club. The unveiling took place twice: the first time on January 24th 1965 and the second on December 8th 1996 due to the reconstruction of the surrounding area.

The monument is also known as Memorial to the Larnaka EOKA 1955-59 fighters. It is dedicated to the memory of Artemis Frantzesco (Αρτέμη Φραντζέσκο), Toumazou Toumazou (Τουμάζου Τουμάζου), Petraki Kyprianou (Πετράκη Κυπριανού), Andrea Souroukli (Ανδρέα Σουρουκλή) and Michalaki Paridi (Μιχαλάκη Παρίδη).

The female figure on the top of the pedestal replicates all the iconic features of the archaic kores. The whole architecture construction bears an absolute symmetry. The stiffness and the rigid frontality of the kori; her verticality underlined by the stylized drapery of the long chiton; and her imposing presence on the high pedestal contradict with the succinct narration of the two depicted fighters.

On the front part of the pedestal, under the relief with the two fallen soldiers, are noted two lines taken from the Greek national anthem “Born from the Greek sacred bones” (Απ’ τα κόκκαλα βγαλμένη των Ελλήνων τα ιερά).

Liberty here is depicted as a Phoenix, the mythical long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn through the ashes of its predecessors. Symbolizing renewal and associated with the sun was subsequently adopted as a symbol in early Christian times. In this case it allegorically implies Cyprus’ regeneration and reborn from the ashes of its heroes and more specifically refers to the liberation of the occupied part of the island. Additionally phoenix is the symbol of the athletic association “Anorthosis” (Recovery) of Ammochostos/Famagusta which has commissioned the sculpture.

This specific type of lion is known as the lion of Saint Mark and is the symbol of the city of Venice. The lion is also one of the four beasts, along with the eagle, the ox, and the winged man (or angel), that symbolize the four evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). According to the Venetian tradition when Saint Mark arrived in Venice an angel appeared to him saying: “Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus” (May peace be with you, Mark, my evangelist). This phrase is written here on the book pages. The lion expresses the power of the Evangelist’s word and is itself a symbol of power and majesty. Its’ wings are an allegory of spiritual elevation and the book summarizes the concepts of wisdom, peace and the state (or city, in Larnaka’s case) sovereignty.

The monument was offered to Larnaka city by Venice Municipality in memory of the Adriatic twinning of the two cities. The unveiling took place on October 2nd 2011.

Hourglass was installed in 2009 and measures “time through civilization where the past meets the future”. The steel cones are reminiscent to the cypress trees, closely connected with afterlife in the Greek tradition. The three steel heads, two male and one female squeezed between the mass of the cones, are emblematic of respective periods of ancient Greek art.

The memorial was constructed after an initiative by Major Panayiotis Koumenis between 1970 and 1984. No further information regarding dates is available. The names of the dead are carved on the marble pedestal. What differentiates this memorial from the vast majority of commemorative locations in Cyprus is the modern, abstract sculpted form on the top of the pedestal, where usually national symbols or allegoric features, such as the victory or liberty, are usually placed. Nevertheless the pedestal per se, and furthermore its height, implies respect and authority, underlines the ‘distance’ between the viewers and the object in vision, and obliges them to raise their heads in order to take a close look.

The memorial belongs to the “Alexandros Papachristoforou” Foundation and was offered to the Cypriot state. The opening ceremony took place on May 22nd 1999.

Vasilis Kattos is the sculptor of the two artworks outside the “House”. On the left-hand side is located the “Missing soldier” or “Quest”. An oversized hand protectively embraces a soldier who bears the facial features of the missing Alexander, the son of the founders Christoforos Christoforou and Eleni Papachristoforou. According to the sculptor the missing soldier symbolically faces towards Pentadachtylos Mountain, in the occupied part of Cyprus.

On the right-hand side, the over-sized head of a Reserve Officer creates the central part of the composition. On his long hair is engraved a number of faces, and the number 1619 which corresponds to the officially listed as missing Greek Cypriots. The sculptor chose to depict only the head and not the body, as an implicit statement of the current unknown status of those soldiers. Next to the Officer’s head is an aged wailing mother. She is reminiscent of the familiar images of the suffering Cypriot mothers, and provides and instant glimpse into the experience of personal and social trauma.

In the inner yard the woman at the feet of the dead soldier who hangs from a pole could be his actual mother or, allegorically, motherland Cyprus. She screams in pain and horror while crawling on the ground. Her impressively intense grief deforms her face and the diagonal positioning of her body echoes her despair on the surrounding walls.

On those same walls a number of symbolic paintings narrate the tormented life of the missing and the prolonged mourning of their families. Flanking the entrance of the gallery Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection remind us of the strong relationship between Cypriot national conflicts and the Cypriot church, as well as the deeply rooted analogies between Christ’s and heroic sacrificial death.

On a plaque on a pillar at the entrance of the “House of the missing” is written:“The island of Cyprus was invaded by Turkey on the 20th July, 1974. Turkish planes, heavy armor, landing craft, and tanks were used. The invading forces numbered 40.000 troops. They captured 40% of the island. Of the half million Greek Cypriot population thousands were killed [..] thousands taken prisoner. Nearly 200.000 became homeless refugees. 3.000 prisoners were released, but 1619 are still missing”.

The western wall of Agios Alexandros church is paved with the black and white photographs of the 1619 missing, while inside the art gallery, which is the central room of the “House”, six oversize paintings are narrating in an eloquent way the suffering of the missing and their families.

Kallipatira was daughter, sister, wife and mother of Olympic Games winners in ancient Greece. She dared to dress like a man and enter the Olympic stadium during the Olympic Games, ignoring the strict prohibition of women. Although she was caught, she avoided the death penalty because of her family reputation and mainly because her act was interpreted as prompted by motherly love and pride.

The statue is an exact copy of one of the figures of the Aradippou village (Larnaka district) memorial dedicated to the Cypriot mother, and the Mother of the dead and missing memorial at Vrisoules village (Ammochostos district). All three are made by the same sculptor.

The monument was commissioned by a private committee for Kallipatira monument and the unveiling took place on February 1st 2004.

Three busts and three pedestals constitute the memorial. The listed as missing Andreas Nikolaou Karoulas (Ανδρέας Νικολάου Καρούλας) and Andreas Savva Alexandrou (Ανδρέας Σάββα Αλεξάνδρου), after whom the community park is named, are commemorated with busts. There is also a bust dedicated to the dead Dimitris Petrou Dimitriou (Δημήτρης Πέτρου Δημητρίου). Contrary to the norm, the dead Georgios Christou Katsanis (Γεώργιος Χρίστου Κατσάνης) is commemorated only with a named plaque on one of the three pedestals that bears more names of, listed as missing, soldiers.

The memorial was commissioned by the Mari Community Committee and the unveiling took place on July 20th 2010.

Stylloi is a village in the occupied part of Ammochostos district. Nevertheless, its’ authorities are regularly elected by their ex-inhabitants in the free part of the island. The same policy is applied to all the occupied municipalities and communities. On the other hand, Mari is a village almost exclusively inhabited by Greek Cypriot refugees, part of them coming from Stylloi.

The statue was commissioned by the Lysi Municipality during the period in office of A. Ttofia. The Afxentiou’ family participated partially to the expenses. Lysi is situated in the occupied part of Cyprus. Nevertheless, all municipalities and communities in the occupied part operate regularly at the free part of the island, electing their local authorities.

The statue is an exact copy of the one placed at Machairas area, on Troodos Mountain, made by the same sculptor. On the pedestal it is noted that its placement at Kalo Chorio is temporary, until it will be placed in the “liberated Lysi”. The eagle usually accompanies Afxentiou in his depictions because he was also known by his nickname “Golden Eagle of Machairas”.

It is not known at what point the nickname “Golden Eagle of Machairas” was attributed to Afxentiou. A version points to Grivas who supposedly called him “Golden Eagle of Pentadaktylos”. The golden eagle’s (Aquila pennata or Hieraaetus pennatus) natural environment is Pentadaktylos Mountain (in the occupied part of the island), where a certain area is also known as “aetofolia” (eagle’s nest). However, the inscription “Golden Eagle of Machairas” which decorates the pedestal of his bust at the Memorial to the Lakatamia dead and missing (Nicosia district), explicitly links the nickname with Afxentiou extensive activity at Machairas and not at Pentadaktylos.

The unveiling took place on January 16th 1994.

Manos Loizos, with Cypriot origins on the part of his father, was a renowned Greek composer. On the wall behind the bust are noted four verses that he orchestrated. They make part of a very popular political song of the 1970s in Greece: “The road had its’ own story to tell; somebody wrote it with paint on the wall; it was only one word, freedom; then it was said that kids wrote it” (Ο δρόμος είχε τη δική του ιστορία, κάποιοι την έγραψαν στον τοίχο με μπογιά. Ήταν μια λέξη μοναχά, ελευθερία, κι έπειτα είπαν πως την έγραψαν παιδιά).
